Friday, August 29, 2003 - Tuna Trip slowed by rough weather Back
Seas: 3-6    Water Temp:   Crew: Tom, Tim and Sam
Moon:     Location: Gulf Shores to Floaters
Species: 1 Tuna, Yellow Fin  Category: Yellow Fin Tuna's
Report: Tried to get a quickie run out to the pretty blue water everybodies been talking about. Weater was iffy but NOAA was giving me hope on Wednesday so we went for it. Friday morning we were met by 2-4's on the way out. We thought we'd keep going and see what happens. Got 70 miles out and it was building to 3-5's. Trolled for 2 hours in miserable conditions. Landed one YFT, 20lber at best and lost a few. Saw a lot of tuna busting but they weren't interested in our spread. Highlight of the trip was seeing my 1st billfish at sea. He came up on a pod of bait and small tuna's. Everything in the water was trying very hard to get away from him. All I saw was his bill come out of the water slapping at something. He was 50 yards in front of us. I couldn't believe my eyes. We trolled to him and a few minutes later the long line starts screaming. Turns out to be the YFT. Oh well next time. Turned for Mobile Bay when storms starting surrounding us from the south and the west. We were in 8 ft'ers by the time we got to the pass. We were met head on by a huge tanker. We were between the barg and Dixie bar in total darkness in rough seas. Doesn't get any worse than that. After a quick diaper change we ran on in. Stepping foot on land never felt so good. 11 hours in the car, 9 hours of riding in the boat in and out, $200 in fuel, all for 1 dinkie YFT and seeing a billfish. Was it worth it?? If you new me you wouldn't even ask!!! As Todd Beamer would say when he fished, "Let's troll!!!!"

One YFT is better than none
