Report:
Just returned from a great trip out Tuesday and Wednesday. I took out a friend and his nephew. It was the young lads 1st time out in the ocean .
We ran out to 110 feet of water on Tuesday morning to at least get a fish on the line. I'm not a charter captain and get nervous when people come with me the 1st time. I don't want to disappoint them.
After a few minutes I hooked a nice fish off the bottom. I passed the rod to young Chris. His eyes almost popped out when he saw that huge, near record, 4 lb red snapper . It was a near record to him anyway. He said that was the coolest thing he'd ever done. Goes to show you some of us take the best things for granted. We stayed at that spot for a couple of hours and landed some more red snappers, and aj's. I told Chris that we might have a chance at a "Big Fish" if we went out a little further.
I put the two of them back in bean bag chairs in the back of the boat and ran out to the Ram Powell. Green water was waiting for us when we got there but no fish. Nothing jumping either. Had to make one last stop before dark.
Pulled up to the Horn Mt rig (also in green water) and saw the Lady Ann run by Captain Mike. He was on the west side of the rig so I headed to the east side to not crowd him. I don't want to get in a charter boats way. Captain Mike hails me on the radio. I thought I'd done something wrong. He said, " Welcome, if you're looking for some tuna action I'm right in the middle of it. Pull up behind me and join the fight, there is plenty of room for both of us. Use the radio and let's work together." Boy I was floored. I had been hit with a R.A.K, a ramdom act of kindness. Well I got in and in a few seconds two long lines were screaming. Young Chris lost his, and his uncle landed a 25 lb yellowfin tuna. A few minutes later the two long lines go off again. I decide to do a little hook setting this time and then hand over the rods. The fight was on. Young Chris was screaming and jumping on the port side, his uncle screaming even louder on the starboard side. Then they switched sides. Then they switched back. I was worn out trying to keep them out of the engines and un tangled. A good while later we land both tunas. Mid 50 lb twins . The two anglers screamed so loud I think it scared people on the rig. They were the biggest fish either of them had ever seen. At one time, our boat, the Lady Ann and another boat were hooked up at the same time. It doesn't get better than that. Ended the day with a cooler full of YFT, and some blackfins from night jigging. Needless to say all were happy.
As far as Captain Mike of the Lady Ann, , thanks for being kind to a newbie. He also calmed me down on the radio when I got caught in a bad storm heading in Wed. Offered to come to the rescue if we got in trouble.
